The Rotary Club of Naperville Sunrise special events raise funds for three avenues of service:

Community, Vocational, and International.

Our motto is "Service Above Self."

Community Service is an opportunity for every Rotarian to exemplify “Service Above Self.” It is the commitment and social responsibility of every Rotarian and Rotary club  to improve the quality of life for those who live in the community and to serve the public interest.

The NaperDink Triathlon 2009 Community Service is:

"Meals on Wheels"

Last year 26,000 meals were served to Naperville seniors. In the Home Delivered Meals Program, over 1,200 meals are packed and delivered each weekday to frail homebound seniors, who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. All meals are packaged and delivered each weekday by a volunteer work force. Volunteers are trained in food safety and DSCC's Emergency Procedures. While these meals provide a vital balance of proper nutrients to nourish and restore the body, that is only part of the story.

The Home Delivered Meals Program also provides the imperative human connection, too often lost on seniors who live alone. The program offers the frail and homebound senior a reassuring smile, a hug, and a familiar visitor who can check that everything is okay, and get help for a senior in need. This program promotes dignified and independent living for all seniors. Last year, over 2,000 seniors received more than 230,000 meals in their own homes through our collective efforts. Vocational Service is the way Rotary fosters and supports the application of the ideal of service in the pursuit of all vocations.

Inherent in the Vocational Service ideal are:

1) Adherence to and promotion of the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including faithfulness and fidelity to employers, employees, and associates, and fair treatment of them and of competitors, the public, and all those with whom one has any business or professional relationships

2) The recognition of the worthiness to society of all useful occupations, not just one’s own or those pursued by Rotarians

3) The contribution of one’s vocational talents to the problems and needs of society

The NaperDink Triathlon 2009 International Service is:

Polio

Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal disease that still strikes children mainly under the age of five in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Ending polio has been Rotary's top priority since 1988 with the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The number of polio cases has been reduced by more than 99 percent, five million cases of childhood paralysis and 250,000 deaths have been averted.

Polio is:

A crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease, polio (poliomyelitis) still strikes children mainly under the age of five in countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death.  Because there is no cure for polio, the best protection is prevention. For as little as US$0.60 worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.
It can cause paralysis within hours, and polio paralysis is almost always irreversible.
In the most severe cases, polio attacks the motor neurons of the brain stem, causing breathing difficulty or even death.
Historically, polio has been the world’s greatest cause of disability.
